Academic Majors

HLES offers undergraduate degrees in five academic disciplines: Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education and Recreation Management. In addition, the HLES PE Basic Instruction Program provides students throughout the university a wide variety of physical activity courses.

Athletic Training educates students on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries/illnesses to the athletic/active population.

Exercise Science prepares students for admission into graduate and professional programs (physical therapy, etc.) and for careers in clinical (i.e., cardiac rehabilitation) and athletic professions (i.e., strength & conditioning). A Masters degree is offered in Exercise Science.

Health Promotion prepares students in developing skills and programs to assess health behaviors and to design, deliver, and evaluate health promotion and risk reduction services such as: smoking, weight loss, diet, exercise, substance abuse, and stress management.

Physical Education prepares students to be effective instructional leaders in K-12 physical education programs.

Recreation Management prepares students to manage natural and cultural recreation resources in order to enhance the leisure experience.
