Health Promotion

Health Promotion Program Goals

The goal of health promotion is to improve the health of individuals and communities through appropriate planning, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion and disease-prevention programs.  The fundamental goal of the Health Promotion area is to educate students in the art and science of developing physical, mental, and social health for individuals and society. Graduates of the Health Promotion area will be prepared as health professionals to have a positive impact on the health and well being of the entire population, and design intervention programs by using a combination of health promotion and related organizational, economic, legislative, and environmental support
.

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Goal One—Instruction:
To deliver a science-based academic program that prepares students for health promotion practice within an educational environment that promotes caring, critical reflection, collaboration, professionalism, and lifelong learning.   

Objective 1:  Deliver a curriculum culminating in the Health Promotion degree that incorporates the core competencies to perform the essential services of health promotion while remaining responsive to the needs of the health related businesses and industries.

Objective 2:  Ensure that students receive adequate opportunities for practical application of learned competencies.

Objective 3:  Offer major and non-major courses that encourage the development of personal behaviors and skills that will lead to a lifetime of positive personal health choices.

Objective 4:  Develop faculty as well informed academic advisors and professional mentors.

Objective 5:  Offer the highest quality academic programs, and routinely revise and update to reflect changing professional or social developments. 

Objective 6:  Support quality internships for students locally in Boone and throughout North Carolina and the Southeast.

Objective 7:  Develop students as critical thinkers with the ability to reflect upon scientific knowledge and continue to expand upon this knowledge throughout their careers.

Goal Two—Community Service:
To support students and faculty in demonstrating health promotion leadership and delivery of health services at the local, state, and national level.

Objective 1:  Provide health community service and activities by faculty and students.   

Objective 2:  Support an extensive internship network throughout the region that provides well-qualified students that can improve the health of individuals in public health department, worksite, and hospital programs.

Goal Three—Research:
To promote and support health related research and scholarly endeavor.

Objective 1:  Support research and other scholarly activities that promote improved lifestyle habits in the population.

Objective 2:  Encourage research and leadership in addressing health promotion priorities, and pursue grants that support the direct provision of health related services to the general public.

Objective 3:  Support the initiation of faculty relationships and research consulting agreements with both the business and medical communities.    

Objective 4:  Support inter-departmental and inter-institutional research efforts.   

Objective 5:  Seek external funds for high cost laboratory equipment and technology.

Goal Four—Distance Education:
To strengthen the existing public health workforce by providing advanced skills, knowledge, and professional learning opportunities throughout North Carolina.

Objective 1: Support the development of distance education and on-line course work to serve a more diverse student population.

PROGRAM ASSESSMENT
Students will:
1.  exhibit basic mastery of health promotion content within their classes and internship.

2.  be able to critically analyze the health promotion literature in their classes by writing review papers on various health-related topics.

3.  be able to reason analytically and discuss relevant research during Health Promotion Seminar (HP4701).

4.  write grant proposals in Health Program Planning and Evaluation (HP2100).5.  demonstrate that they can apply health promotion principles during their internships as evaluated by the on-site supervisor.
