Established in 1992. Eric DeGroat taught physical education and recreation classes in the HLES department. He was one of the founders of Appalachian Ski Mountain and taught people how to use the short skis. He trained military members to ski in Boone. Eric Degraot also started many of the athletic areas at ASU. This scholarship was established by his wife and children and is highly supported by Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Established in 1987. Cleone Haynes Hodges was a National Champion Golfer several times in the senior games. She was hired to teach in the department by the first chancellor ASU had. She is still very active in her golfing and participating in the senior games. Her and her family established this scholarship to help others in Health Education.

Established in 1996. Roger Thomas was one of the founders of the Athletic Training program at ASU. He was the coach of the Golf team for several years. He was also very involved with the intramurals on campus. His first wife and their children started this scholarship.

Dr. John H. Williams:
Established in 1998. John Williams was a faculty member of HLES and the ASU diving coach. He was very interested in health and fitness and was a master champion in diving several times. His son started this scholarship for students that are interested in heath professions.

RON "Doc" KANOY :
Established in 2000. Ron "Doc" Kanoy established the first certified Athletic Training program at ASU. He was a long time head trainer. He took the AT program from just a few classes into a major program. Former athletes and "Doc's" students started this scholarship.

Ed Turner Scholarship and Requirements |
This scholarship will be given to the Physical Education Teacher Education major who is a rising junior or senior (if the student is a senior they must be taking classes in the fall and student teaching in the spring. Those teaching in the fall will not be eligible). The scholarship will be earned by the student who has been accepted to the College of Education and shows the most improvement in the following areas
• GPA
• Field Experience
• Disposition
• Leadership
• Participation in non-academic activities such as the PETE Majors Club, teaching and/or coaching outside of academic classes, charitable organizations etc.
2) Each student will be required to submit a copy of their transcript, a curriculum vita, an essay describing their philosophy of physical education and what they hope to accomplish as physical education teacher.
Recreation Management Association Scholarship:
Established in 2004. Funds for this scholarship were raised over a decade by members of the Recreation Management Association, the organization for students majoring in the field. This is the only scholarship at Appalachian created through the fund raising efforts of a student majors club.
Requirements:
Must be a declared Recreation Management major
A rising senior
An active member of the Recreation Management Association
Have a minimum 3.0 grade point average
Sponsored by a Recreation Management faculty member
Sports Source Ortho Scholarship:
Each year the scholarship shall be awarded to the most qualified applicant with a major in athletic training in the department of HLES.
Requirements
Be admitted into the undergraduate athletic training program.
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
Demonstrate evidence of being active in their discipline such as involvement in appropriate academic and professional organizations
